
Getting Glass Annealing Right After Screen Printing
Here’s the deal: when you push glass through a screen printing line, you’re dealing with a thermal mismatch. The ink and the glass aren’t reacting to the heat the same way. If you just let it cool on its own, you’re asking for internal stress. That’s how you end up with glass that looks fine but is basically a ticking time bomb. To fix this, we use integrated IR annealing heaters. They stabilize the material without messing up your prints.
The balancing act: Heat vs. Blur
You want a controlled ramp-down. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. If you go too aggressive with the heat, the ink bleeds or “ghosts.” Suddenly, your sharp lines are a blurry mess. But if you keep it too low? The glass stays brittle. We stick with short-wave IR lamps. Why? Because they punch through the glass surface fast. It lets us hit the target temperature for both the ink and the glass at the same time. You’ll spend some time tweaking the wattage against your conveyor speed. You need a high-density heat load to hit that annealing point, but you’ve got to be careful with lamp positioning.**Avoid hotspots at all costs.**If one spot is hotter than the rest, the glass contracts unevenly and—snap—you’ve got a crack during the final cool-down.
The nitty-gritty of the setup
We usually set these heaters up in zones. The first zone hits the peak temp to set the ink. After that, the following zones gradually bring the temperature down. One thing to watch: your power draw. These high-wattage IR arrays are hungry. If you’re pushing 5kW per section, make sure your wiring can actually handle a continuous load. If your voltage drops or fluctuates, your temperature swings. In this business, a tiny 10-degree difference is often the only thing standing between a perfect part and a pile of scrap.
Living with it on the shop floor
The good news is these lamps are basically drop-in replacements for standard IR housings. No need to rebuild your whole line. We use quartz envelopes to keep the heat moving efficiently. Just do me a favor:keep the lenses clean. If dust builds up on the quartz, the lamps overheat. They’ll burn out way faster than they should, and nobody wants to stop production to swap bulbs on a Tuesday afternoon.
