
Why Fast-Response IR Lamps are a Must for Glass Tube Production
When you’re sealing and annealing glass tubes, you’ve got a very specific problem: you need the glass to hit its softening point right now, but you don’t want to turn your entire machine frame into an oven. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in. Instead of relying on hot air to drift around (convection), these lamps blast energy directly via radiation. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into direct sunlight. It’s instant. The need for speed Standard resistive heaters are just too slow. They lag. In a continuous production line, a few seconds of lag is a disaster. Shortwave IR lamps hit their peak temperature in milliseconds. Just milliseconds. This means as the glass slides through the sealing zone, the heat is exactly where it needs to be, exactly when it needs to be there. You get a concentrated hit of energy that goes straight into the glass surface. Stopping the cracks Nobody likes seeing a batch of glass crack because of internal stress. That’s why online annealing is such a lifesaver. By lining up a series of these IR lamps, we can create a smooth, controlled cooling gradient. It lets you move from sealing to annealing in one fluid motion. No more lugging things into massive, slow-moving batch ovens. It just flows. But here’s the catch: these lamps pack a serious punch. They put out a massive amount of energy in a tiny space. If your cooling fans or heat sinks aren’t up to the task, you’re going to fry your electrical housings and kill your lamps way too early.Don’t skimp on the cooling. Getting it right on the floor We build these systems so you aren’t fighting with them. We use standard connectors, so if a lamp burns out, you can swap it in a couple of minutes and get the line moving again. We also use quartz envelopes—they can handle the heat and let the IR spectrum pass through without soaking it up. One last thing: alignment is everything.
