
Stop Fighting Bathroom Mold (and Just Dry the Walls)
Most people see those infrared lamps in the bathroom and think, “Oh, a fancy heater to keep me warm.” But if you look under the hood, they’re doing something way cooler than just warming your skin. We actually use them as tools to hunt down moisture.
How it actually works
We use shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. Now, unlike a regular space heater that just blows hot air around the room, these actually penetrate the surfaces of your bathroom—we’re talking the tiles, the grout, and the sealant. It basically makes the water molecules inside those materials vibrate. The result? The water evaporates right where it’s hiding. When these are up in your ceiling, they hit the walls and floors directly. It kills that “cold wall” feeling where steam turns back into water droplets. And since mold needs standing water to survive, you’ve basically taken away its food and home.
Keeping things dry
Mold loves three things: dampness, darkness, and air that doesn’t move. By tweaking the light spectrum toward the near-infrared range, we can bump up the temperature of the walls themselves. This creates a push-and-pull effect that forces moisture out of the grout and into the air, where your exhaust fan can actually grab it and toss it outside. It’s a quiet, hands-off way to keep the room dry.
A few warnings before you start
Here’s the thing: you can’t just slap these into any ceiling and call it a day. These lamps gethot. Really hot. If your ceiling isn’t rated for that kind of heat, you’re going to scorch your house. We always suggest using heat-reflective backing plates to keep your structure safe. And a heads-up on the electrics. These things pull a lot of power the second they kick on. If your wiring is old or too thin, you’ll be tripping your breakers every time the timer starts. Make sure you have a dedicated circuit, or you’ll be spending a lot of time in the garage resetting the power.
