
Getting Your IR Heaters to Actually Talk to Your Glass
Most standard IR heaters are just throwing energy at the wall and hoping for the best. The problem is that the heat they put out doesn’t always “click” with the material it’s hitting. This gets especially messy when you’re working with tempered glass additives. Those additives change the way glass drinks in heat, creating these very specific “sweet spots” in the infrared spectrum. If your heater isn’t hitting those spots, you’re just wasting electricity.
Stop Pushing More Watts
When the glass isn’t heating up fast enough, the instinct is to just crank up the wattage.Don’t do that. That’s how you end up with surface overheating and thermal shock. It’s like trying to thaw a frozen steak with a blowtorch—you burn the outside while the inside stays frozen. Instead, we tweak the heater itself. We mess with the filament mix and the quartz coating to shift the heat wave so it lines up perfectly with your glass chemistry. When those two peaks match? The energy goes straight into the glass. You get a faster ramp-up and a pane that’s heated evenly all the way through, not just on the skin.
The Trade-off (Because Nothing is Free)
Here is the catch. When we tune a heater to be this precise, your margin for error shrinks. Because the spectrum is narrower, your conveyor speed and gap distance have to be spot on. If your glass thickness starts swinging or your feed rate gets twitchy, a hyper-tuned heater won’t be as forgiving as a broad-spectrum one. You’ll want to make sure your PID controllers are dialed in to handle those tighter windows.
What Happens on the Floor
The good news is that these are drop-in replacements. You plug them into your existing power rails and you’re good to go. You’ll notice the difference immediately. The glass hits bending temperature without that intense surface glare. It takes the pressure off your cooling fans and stops that annoying “skin effect” where the outside is scorching but the core is still too stiff to bend. Just a heads-up: if you switch your glass additive supplier, we’ll probably need to tweak the spectral curve again to keep your cycle times where they need to be.
