
Getting Your Infrared Tubes to Actually Work With Your Power Grid
Clear quartz infrared tubes are basically the muscle of any industrial drying or curing setup. Their whole job is to move heat—and move it fast. Because we use clear quartz, that short-wave radiation doesn’t get stuck in the glass; it shoots straight through and hits your material exactly where it needs to.
The Headache of Voltage (110V to 575V)
Here’s the thing: most lamps you find on a shelf are built for 230V. But the real world isn’t that simple. Maybe you’re in a US shop running 110V. Maybe you’re in a heavy industrial plant at 480V, or over in Canada dealing with 575V. Matching your tube to your grid isn’t just about getting the light to turn on. It’s about the current. If you try to force a high-wattage tube into a low-voltage circuit without the right specs, you’re going to trip breakers or, worse, fry your wiring. To stop that from happening, we tweak the diameter and length of the tungsten filament. That way, you get the exact wattage you need for your specific line voltage. No surprises.
The Materials (And the Catch)
We stick with high-purity fused quartz. Why? Because it can take a beating. It handles those massive temperature spikes and thermal shocks when you’re ramping up for a fast run. You get a clear, direct line of sight for the energy, which is great. But there is a trade-off. Clear quartz is picky. Really picky. One single fingerprint on the glass can create a hot spot, and that’s usually how tubes fail early.**Use gloves.**Or, if you’ve already touched it, hit it with some IPA (isopropyl alcohol) before you flip the switch.
Putting Them to Work
We build these with different end-cap options so they just slide right into your existing rigs. Whether it’s a PET blowing machine or a powder coating line, the fit has to be spot on. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, it’s just a waste of time. And a quick heads-up on those high-voltage tubes (480V+): they put out an incredible amount of heat. Just double-check that your housing and cooling fans can keep up with the ambient heat build-up. If they can’t, you’ll end up warping your reflectors, and that’s a mess nobody wants to clean up.
