
Getting Your Glass Bending Right: The Secret is in the Spectrum
Most infrared lamps are just… generic. They pump out heat, but a lot of that energy never actually makes it into the glass. It just vanishes. When you start adding things to your glass to change how it behaves, you’re essentially changing how it “drinks” heat. If your lamp is singing one note and your glass is listening for another, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll end up with internal stress or those annoying optical distortions that ruin a piece. Hitting the right note We don’t just blast the glass with general heat. We tweak the infrared spectrum so it lines up perfectly with your specific glass chemistry. How? We play around with the filament material and the gas pressure inside the lamp to shift the emission curve. We’re aiming for that sweet spot—the exact micron range where your additives are most hungry for energy. The result is heat that actually sinks deep into the glass bulk. No more scorching the surface while the middle stays cold. It’s all in the reflection The reflector does more than just bounce light around; it decides where the heat actually lands. Depending on the wavelength you need, we use high-purity aluminum or go with gold-coated substrates. If you’re working with longer wavelengths, gold is a must, otherwise, you’re just losing energy. We also obsess over the curvature. If the reflector is off by even a few millimeters, you get hot spots. And hot spots lead to cracks. Simple as that. The trade-off Here is the honest part: when you tune a lamp for a very narrow peak, you usually lose some raw wattage. You get way more precision and better penetration, but it might take a bit longer to hit that softening point than it would with a broad-spectrum lamp. You’ll probably need to slow down your conveyor belt to make sure the thermal transfer has time to work its magic. Just a tip—double-check your additive concentrations before we lock in the spectral map. It’s much easier to get the map right now than to realize you overshot the peak after the lamps are built.
