
Keeping Your Bathroom Heaters from Blowing Up
Let’s be honest: putting a high-heat lamp in a room full of steam and splashing water sounds like a recipe for disaster. When you’ve got a tube running at several hundred degrees and a cold drop of water hits it, things can go south fast. That’s where the glass comes in. Most quartz glass is great with heat, but it hates surprises. If a stray droplet hits a hot spot, the glass shrinks unevenly and—snap—you’ve got a broken tube. We use explosion-proof quartz because it can handle those wild temperature swings without shattering. It’s basically the only thing standing between you and a mess of glass shards and a short circuit while you’re trying to dry off.
How the heat actually works
These lamps use shortwave infrared. Instead of trying to warm up all the air in the room (which takes forever), the heat shoots straight through the air and hits your skin. It’s that instant “ahhh” feeling. We usually tuck these into high-ceiling fixtures so the heat has room to travel and cover more ground. One quick heads-up on the electrics: these things are power-hungry. When you flip the switch, there’s a big initial surge. If your breaker is a bit weak, you’ll be walking to the electrical panel every single morning to reset the power. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the load.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, “explosion-proof” doesn’t mean “invincible.” If you install the lamp where it’s getting blasted directly by the shower spray, the constant heating and cooling will eventually wear it down. Give it some breathing room and make sure you’re using a proper waterproof housing to keep the tubes dry. And please, don’t try to save a few bucks by swapping in a cheap, generic replacement bulb. Those lower-grade tubes aren’t built for this. They’ll likely crack or burn out within a few months, and that’s a risk you really don’t want to take in a wet bathroom.
