Why IR actually works
Most heating elements rely on convection. That’s slow. It’s like trying to heat a room with a space heater—it takes a while for the air to move. IR is different. It’s radiation. The heat hits the glass surfaceinstantly. It’s fast. Really fast. And that changes everything for your workflow. Since the response is almost immediate, you can tweak the heat profile on the fly. If you decide to speed up the line, you just bump up the power. The glass stays at the annealing point, and you keep moving.
Getting the heat right
We build these lamps to take a beating. We use quartz envelopes and halogen gas refills so they can run hotter and last longer without burning out. Depending on what you’re making, you can set up different zones for pre-heating, soaking, and that critical controlled cooling phase. Here is the cool part: short-wave IR actually sinks deeper into the glass than the long-wave stuff. It gets the core of the glass up to temperature without scorching the outside. You don’t have to worry about the surface cracking because the inside was still too cold.
The real-world stuff
Moving to IR lamps saves a ton of floor space. You can ditch the massive oven and reclaim your shop. But, a heads-up: this kind of concentrated heat puts a real strain on your electrical gear. You’ll want to make sure your controllers can handle those rapid switching cycles. If they can’t, you’re just going to fry your contactors. And one last thing. If you’re running 24/7,watch your reflectors. Dust loves to settle on those mirrors. If they get dirty, your efficiency tanks.
