The reality of heating glass
To bend glass without cracking the surface, you need heat that hits hard and deep. That’s where shortwave infrared (SWIR) comes in. We use high-purity quartz envelopes because they can take the brutal thermal stress without giving up. But here’s the thing: you have to get the wattage and voltage exactly right for your transformer. If you go too high? You’re looking at tripped breakers or, worse, melted housings. Go too low, and you’ll end up with uneven bends and those annoying optical distortions that make a piece of glass look “off.”
The trade-offs you should know about
We build these to fit your exact footprint. Whether you’re running R7s or SK15 connectors, the fit has to be snug. If it’s loose, you lose electrical contact, and that’s just a recipe for headaches. We also offer coated quartz. It helps push the heat toward the glass instead of wasting it on your furnace walls. Just keep in mind that high-wattage tubes pump out a massive amount of heat. It’s great for speed, but it puts a lot of pressure on your cooling system. If your furnace fans can’t keep up with the ambient heat, your quartz envelope is going to fail a lot sooner than it should.
