
Stop the Chips: Why We Preheat Glass with Infrared
Cutting glass always feels like a fight against the material itself. If you’ve ever scored and snapped a piece at room temperature, you know the frustration. You get those tiny, jagged micro-cracks and annoying chips along the edge that ruin a perfect piece. We found a better way: infrared (IR) preheating. It basically changes how the glass behaves the moment the blade hits.
How it actually works
Here is the thing about quartz glass—it reacts to heat in a very specific way. When we hit the surface with targeted IR radiation right before the cut, the glass warms up. This makes the material a bit more “forgiving” at the cutting point. Instead of the crack jumping around and leaving jagged edges, it travels in a straight, clean line. The result? A smooth break and way fewer chips to worry about.
Setting up the lamps
We usually go with shortwave IR lamps. Why? Because they’re fast. They punch through the surface and deliver a ton of heat quickly, so you aren’t sitting around waiting for the glass to soak up the temperature. We keep these lamps in quartz sleeves so they don’t get contaminated and can handle the heat without melting down. But you have to be careful. It’s a balancing act. If you go too hot, you’ll warp the glass or cause a thermal shock (which is a disaster). Too cold, and you’re right back to square one with the chipping. You have to get the distance between the lamp and the glass just right to keep the temperature steady across the whole line.
The reality of the build
Now, this isn’t some magic wand that works the same for every single piece of glass. Soda-lime and borosilicate handle it well, but depending on how thick your glass is, you’ll need to tweak the wattage. Also, keep in mind that high-power IR arrays are thirsty for power. If you’re running these 24/7, you need a beefy power supply and some solid cooling fans, or your housing is going to fry. And for heaven’s sake, don’t forget the shielding. You don’t want your team staring directly into IR radiation all day. Safety first.
